1 jan ‘06 : New Year’s day
6 jan ’06 : Epiphany : Orthodox Church, Baptism of Christ in the Jordan and conjunction of the Holy trinity. Holy water fonts are blessed to banish the demons. After the service, a procession lead by the local bishop, goes to the seaside. The bishop blesses the water, a crucifix is thrown into the sea and young divers swim to find it.
6 Mar ’06 : Green Monday or Clean (Lent) Monday : Symbolises the beginning of the Lent, Celebrated 40 days before Easter day.
25 mar ’06 : Greek national Day : Dual Holiday, both secular and religious. In 1821 the Greeks rose up to the oppressive Ottoman Empire, which had occupied Greece for nearly hundred years. As the war ended in independence, Bishop Germanos of Patras hoisted the Greek flag at the monastery of Agia Lavras. (Peloponessos). It is also celebrating Archangels Gabriël’s annunciation to Virgin Mary and the actual incarnation of Jesus Christ.
1 Apr ’06 : Greek Cypriot National Day: anniversary of the start of the liberation struggle of the Greek Cypriots against British Colonial Rule in 1955.
21 Apr ’06 : Good Friday: Greek Orthodox, beginning of the Holy Week. Special holiday Cakes are baked, which break the Lenten Fast. Hard Boiled eggs are painted red.

1 May ’06 : Labour Day
12 May ’06 : Monday of Penticos (Kataklysmos): festival of the Floor, held fifty day after Easter, unique the South Cyprus, Remembers the salvation of Noa and his family to the Flood. People get into the sea and sprinkle each other with water for purification. Also sacred utensils are purified with water. The celebration lasts 3 day’s and is of great cultural significance.
15 Aug ’06 : Assumption Day : Assumption of the Virgin Mary, who in bodily form ascended into heaven after her death.
1 Oct ’06 : Cyprus independence Day: Cyprus became independent after a four year guerrilla war against the British occupation. Cyprus was a colony if Britain since 1878 until oct 1 st 1960.
28 Oct ’06 : Greek National Day :known as Ochi Day or No day : On this day the Greeks refused Mussolini to enter Greece in 1940.
